Alysha Newman

Alysha Newman is a Canadian track and field athlete who specializes in the pole vault. She competed at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Alysha Newman is the 2018 Commonwealth Games champion in the women’s pole vault, where she set a new Games record of 4.75m. Her personal best is 4.82m achieved at the Stade Charlety event in Paris in 2019.

Alysha Eveline Newman was born on June 29, 1994, in London, Ontario, Canada. She started in sports at an early age, but initially tried in gymnastics. However, at the age of 13 she moved to track and field athletics and pole vaulting. At the college level, she was the Mid-American Conference champion and competed in the NCAA tournament. Alysha Newman successfully cleared 4.60m, breaking the University of Miami school record, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) record, and Canadian national record in the women’s pole vault. She won the silver medal at the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships and finished her college career as a six-time NCAA Division I All-American.

Alysha Newman competed in the pole vault event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, winning the bronze medal. The same season she won the gold at the Coral Gables Miami Invitational, Atlanta Georgia Tech Invitational and Guelph Speed River Twilight, as well as the silver at the Gainesville Florida Relays and the Chapel Hill ACC Championship.

In 2016, Alysha Newman won the Edmonton Canadian Championships and Bolton Pole Vault All-Comers, as well as Bolton Pole Vault Season Opener.

She continue performing strong i next two seasons (2017-2018), winning the Montreal Grand Prix d’Athletisme, Toronto Fred Foot Memorial, Ottawa Canadian Championships, and Bolton Pole Vault Outdoor Classic in 2017, as well as Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Windsor Can Am Classic, Fayetteville Tyson Invitational, and Toronto Pole Vault Invitational in 2018.

The season 2019 was the most successful for Alysha Newman, as she won the Paavo Nurmi Games and Meeting de Paris (setting a personal best), as well as finished third at the Pan American Games. She started competing in the Diamong League, winning silvers at the Stabhochsprung-Meeting and the Muller Grand Prix and the gold at the Meeting de Paris.

In 2021, she competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but failed to win a medal. However, she finished third at the Villa de Madrid part from the World Athletics Indoor Tour.
