Sophie Becker

Sophie Becker is an Irish athlete, who competed in the women’s 400m event at the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships. She took part in the mixed 4x400m relay event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Sophie Becker is also an IAAF World Relays Silver medalist, as well as a four-time national champion.

Sophie Becker was born on May 16, 1997, in Wexford, Republic of Ireland. She started running at the age of ten and quickly realized that she had a talent and from the age of 15 began to train seriously with her running club, St Joseph’s AC.

Sophie Becker started her competitive career in 2013, finishing 4th at the Tullamore Irish U23 Championships and Tullamore Woodie’s DIY AAI Juvenile Championships in 100m, as well as fifth at the Tullamore Irish U23 Championships in 200m.

In 2014, she won the 60m bronze and 200m gold at the Athlone U18 Indoor Events. She also competed at the Athlone Irish Junior Indoor Championships and Cork Irish Junior Championships, but remained without winning an honor.

In 2015, Sophie Becker won the 60m bronze at the Tullamore Irish Junior Championships, as well as the 400m bronze at the Athlone Irish Juvenile Indoor Championships. She also won the gold at the Athlone Regional Indoor Championships in 400m and debuted at the Dublin Irish Championships in 400m.

Sophie Becker started the 2016 indoor season by finishing 4th at the Athlone Irish Indoor Championships in 200m, being a step from the medals. She won the 400m bronze at the Athlone Irish U23/U20 Indoor Championships. During the outdoor season, she competed at the Oordegem IFAM Meeting in 400m and 4x400m relay, as well as at the Dublin Irish Championships in 400m. She won the bronze at the Tullamore Irish U23/U20 Championships and the silver at the Tullamore Irish Schools Championships in 400m.

In 2017, Sophie Becker competed at the Bydgoszcz European U23 Championships in 400m and 4x400m relay but missed the medals. At the international 5th CSIT World Sports Games in Jelgava, she won the gold in 200m and 400m. During the season, she dominated junior athletics in Ireland, winning the gold at the Athlone Irish U23/U20 Indoor Championships in 60m and 200m, as well as the gold at the Tullamore Irish U23/U20 Championships in 400m.

Sophie Becker won her first national medal in 2018, winning the silver at the Dublin Irish Championships in 400m. She also competed at the Berlin European Athletics Championships in the 4x400m relay but again missed the medals. During the season, she won the gold at the Oordegem IFAM Meeting, as well as the silver at the Bruxelles Grand Prix, Waterford Ton Le Gaoithe Sprints Meeting, and Belfast Irish University Championships in 400m.

In 2019, Sophie Becker started the indoor season strongly, winning the 60m and 200m gold at the Irish U23 Indoor Championships. She also won the 200m gold at the Athlone IUAA Indoor Championships and the 400m gold at the Abbotstown AAI Indoor Games. Sophie Becker won her second national medal, earning the silver at the Abbotstown Irish Indoor Championships in 400m. She also competed at the Glasgow European Indoor Championships. During the outdoor season, her strong performance continues, winning another national silver at the Santry Irish Championships in 400m. She earned the silver at the Athlone Irish University Championships and the gold at the Dublin Graded Meeting in 400m, as well as the silver at the Abbotstown AAI Indoor Games in the 4x400m relay. She took part in the Gavle European U23 Championships but remained without a medal.

Sophie Becker won her first national titles in 2020 at the Dublin Irish Indoor Championships and Dublin Irish Championships in 400m.

In 2021, Sophie Becker competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the 4x400m mixed relay, finishing 8th in the final. Individually she competed at Torun European Athletics Indoor Championships in 400m, but again missed the medals. However, she won the silver at the Belfast Irish Milers Meet in 400m. Her biggest achievement during the season was the silver at the Chorzow World Athletics Relays in 4x200m.

In 2022, Sophie Becker was part of the Irish team at the Eugene World Athletics Championships, competing in a 4x400m mixed relay, finishing 8th in the final. She won her third national title at the Dublin Irish Championships in 400m but also finished second at the Dublin Irish Indoor Championships in the same event. Sophie Becker won the 400m gold at the World Indoor Tour Madrid 2022. She won the 4x400m relay bronze at the Oslo Bislett Games and 400m and 4x400m relay silver at the IFAM Oordegem in the 4x400m relay. She earned the gold at the Belfast Irish Milers Meet in 400m and also competed at the Beograd World Athletics Indoor Championships and Munich European Athletics Championships.

Sophie Becker was one of the most successful sprinters in Ireland in 2023. In 400m, she earned the gold at the Dublin AAI Games and Ninove Flanders Cup Vita, as well as the silver at the 58th International Pentecost Sport Meeting Rehlingen. During the season, she won her fourth national title at the Irish Indoor Championships and the silver at the Dublin Irish Championships in 400m. She competed at the Istanbul European Athletics Indoor Championships in 400m and 4x400m relay.
